IMG_0121Before we chose our cabinets or appliances for our kitchen, we went over to Oregon Tile and Marble in Portland to pick out our counters. I had no idea how the process of getting granite counters worked, but thankfully the friendly staff walked Gord and I through.

First thing to do was pick a slab of granite or marble. Umm…..easier said than done.

Screen Shot 2013-05-29 at 10.48.11 PMThere were so many different slabs to choose from that we ended up not being able to decide the first time there! We went back a second time a few weeks later to officially pick our counters.

Screen Shot 2013-05-29 at 10.47.44 PMThis is the ginormo slab of granite that we chose: Delicates Granite from Brazil. It was the lightest white/black/grey granite combination I could find, so we went with it. Of course Oregon Tile and Marble had the gorgeous Carrera Marble I’d been drooling over for months but had to choose practicality and durability over straight up looks. Can you tell my husband had a hand in convincing me?

I really do love our granite though 🙂

So, once we finally decided which slab was the right one for our kitchen, we put it on hold at OTM and then contacted our granite fabricators to do the rest! –>These are the guys who cut and install it in your house.

We chose to go with Elite Granite and Marble. Elite is a smaller, family run business that was recommended to me by several people. I’m so glad I went with them because they did such an amazing job! Not to mention they were 100% willing to work around my crazy installation schedule….and baby schedule. The baby was the real kicker in this whole kitchen reno, let me tell you! LOL! This little dude didn’t wait for anyone or anything.

IMG_0005On the day of installation, they had my granite all cut and ready to go and actual installation took 4 hours approximately. I was in and out the entire time tending to the baby, but my husband {and parents} were watching the entire time, totally fascinated by the process. Pretty sure it convinced my parents to redo their kitchen!!

IMG_0116After a few hours, we had counters!! Yay! Our island was cut to have a little bit of a curve in it to allow more room for those on the bar stools. And, if you look closely, you can see how the edges of our counters were finished. This edge is called Mastif. Nothing too pointy or fancy. We’re simple folk.

IMG_0165Here’s another look at the island from a different angle. This shows the color in the stone really well.

IMG_0163I was really impressed with how accurate all their cuts were. This granite slid right into place like a glove! I was really worried about this spot by the dishwasher, but of course everything went in just fine.

IMG_0110Elite also had the hole for our sink precut and installed the sink for us! They also cut the hole for our faucet too. It was great! Such a good feeling to get counters AND a sink installed on the same day!

tileOH! And, I almost forgot! We ordered our backsplash through Elite Granite and Marble. Once the counters were in and the plumber got our water hooked up, my husband and father installed all the tile. I wanted subway tiles, but my husband wanted something more than just the plain rectangular white tiles that are all the rage and popping up everywhere. When we saw the long skinny 2×22″ white tiles, we both were sold.  It was a good compromise and ended up lookong great against the counters.

Overall, we are extremely happy with both Oregon Tile & Marble and Elite Granite and Marble and we would highly recommend either company if you’re in the market for new counters.

Great detailed post on the process, I work for a home builder and I have to say that people who opt to go with a tile backsplash instead of a small granite backsplash get such a better looking kitchen. It makes a huge difference, great job to your family on doing it themselves, gotta save money where you can!
