Portland Guide: Food Carts

I’m so excited to be sharing with you all another installment of my Portland Guides today! This time I took my whole family out on the town to get some of our favorite food cart foods! There will probably end up being 1 or 2 more of these videos because Portland is KNOWN for food carts and there are close to 1000 of them in our small little city.

For this video, I picked out some of our go-to spots because we know and love them well 🙂 As I’ll explain in my descriptions of each food cart, but fyi, each one is found as a part of a grouping or ‘pod’. If you google said pods, you’ll find them {and directions!} no problem.

A few little facts about this video:

We shot it on a Saturday afternoon in about 4 hours time. Our kids are troopers!!

We DID NOT eat all the food. We mostly gave it all away to our camera crew who happily ate it all…except for that milkshake that Brooke and Blake guzzled.

I was 26 1/2 weeks pregnant when this was all filmed. Proof I have a belly!

My favorite part of this particular video is at Waffle Window. I just love that Blakey Cakey 🙂

Anyways, we hope you enjoy this third installment. I love sharing my favorite spots in beautiful Portland.

See my first Portland Guide here. My second Portland Guide here.

Food Carts

1. Laurelhurst Park– Whenever we are in the general vicinity of these food carts, we typically need to find a good activity for our kids to break up the day and tire them out. {Other parents will know what I’m talking about!} This is the perfect *huge* park for this very thing. Lots of space, lots of swings, slides, see-saws and even some soccer fields and tennis courts. It’s a beautiful park within the city.

Good Food Here Food Carts

2. a) Namu Korean & Hawaiian–My husband is an Asian food fanatic. If he could eat this kind of food all the live long day and not get fat, he totally would. His favorite thing to order off the menu is the Bulgogi plate. And I order the Hawaiian donuts, which are totally worth the wait! They make them fresh, so you end up waiting 7ish minutes, but my oh my a warm fresh sugary donut is so worth it!
2. b) Herb’s Mac n’ Cheese–There are lots of varieties of mac and cheese at this cart, but Brooke and I decided that our favorite was the plain macaroni and cheese with bacon added in. It’s a tried and true classic that will blow your mind! So creamy and delicious!
2. c) Cackalacks Hot Chicken Shack–The chicken and waffles here are some of the best I’ve had in the city. The coating on the fried chicken is PRIME. I get my chicken as mild as possible {because I’m weak sauce and so are my kids} and then cut it into pieces and dip it into the maple syrup. Then in between the bites of chicken, I take bites of the really really surprisingly good waffle {with more syrup}. The kicker? The fresh dill pickles! Give me a bucket of those and I’ll be your friend forever {–>this could just be pregnancy talking though…}

Cartopia {SE 12th Ave & Hawthorne}

3. a) Perierra Creperie–I grew up eating crepes so they’re not really a ‘treat’ for me, but I do quite enjoy the crepes here whenever we’re in the neighborhood. My kids always beg for the nutella crepes and I like the plain sugar and lemon. Also: the Oreo mint milkshake is AMAZING. It’s made with fresh mint sprigs which makes for a lovely minty but totally un-artificial taste.
3. b) Potato Champion–French fries galore at this food cart. PB&J fries!! Pulled Pork fries!! And all sorts of other combos. I featured their poutine in this video. Incase you don’t know what that is, it’s brown gravy and cheese curds on top of french fries. It’s a delicious Canadian thing. You can take the girl out of Canada, but you can’t take Canada out of the girl.
3. c) Pyro Pizza–wood fired pizza is my jam! They do it right here. Chewy yet crispy thin crust pizza cooked to perfection. Also delicious is their roasted garlic bread. Next time, I’m getting it with cheese. It is YUM.

Waffle Window

Savory and sweet options at this literally window in the side of a building. It’s a fun stop to make, especially when you see all these fun concoctions of waffles all around you! We ordered the blueberry cheesecake waffle and a peanut butter nutella waffle with ice cream. They are not the worst things to eat 😉 Everything I’ve had here has been great! It’s a fun, very Portland stop to make while you’re in the city.

    Oh man I miss Portland! We hope to go back and visit next year and we definitely need to hit up the food trucks! I’ll have to take a look at this next time we go and try some of these out! Congratulations on the new baby by the way!
