Well, as you all know the past few weeks I’ve been dealing with some bleeding here and there. Well on Monday surprise surprise I started spotting again…except this time it didn’t stop. The first time it happened I went in to get checked out and the baby was fine and no sign of where the blood was coming from. It stopped within 24 hours and didn’t return until a week later. This 2nd time I called the doctor again and was told to monitor it at home. I did and it stopped within 24 hours.

Then on Monday it all started up again and didn’t stop after 24 hours. I didn’t even bother calling the doctor at first since I wasn’t having cramping and/or contractions. But once it didn’t go away, I called Tuesday morning to let them know what was going on. My doc wasn’t in, so the on-call doctor had me head up to the hospital ‘just incase it was something serious with the placenta’. Yeah, that made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Thankfully Brooke had an early Valentine’s Day party with some friends lined up so I could go to the hospital alone. I am so thankful that I had people I trusted to leave my daughter with. It was seriously a huge weight lifted off of me.

Screen Shot 2013-02-14 at 2.26.45 PMAnyways, I got to the hospital around 1 and hung out in a Triage room. Because I wasn’t considered to be an emergency {thankfully} I got to wait around until the doctors and nurses were free. Here’s basically what happened while I was there:

-check in, sign a million papers

-change into gown, give urine sample, hang out in Triage Room C

-Nurse comes in and puts monitors on my belly to measure baby.

-Wait for high risk doctor

-High risk doctor is dealing with an Emergency. I see the midwife.

-Midwife wants to do internal exam. Joy. {I did see this coming though}

-Nurse comes in to prep room for internal exam.

-Midwife comes back and does internal exam. Thinks I have a few polyps. Wants to order blood work and ultrasound but has to check with the High Risk Doctor first for 2nd opinion.

-I take a nap

-I watch Friends and curse the AT&T network because my reception SUCKS at the hospital

-Nurse comes in to say the Midwife went to an Emergency and hasn’t talked to the High Risk Doctor yet but ordered the ultrasound and blood work anyways.

-I wait some more and switch between watching Property Brothers and Judge Judy.

-Thankful I never had Judge Judy as a mother.

-The ultrasound tech shows up and starts checking things out.

-My baby looks good. Ultrasound tech confirms that he is in fact still a boy. Ultrasound tech starts looking for placenta, heart and brain.

-Phlebotomist shows his face and states he’s arrived to take my blood. Phlebotomist and Ultrasound tech agree to have half the lights on in the room so they both can do their jobs at the same time.

-Phlebotomist needs me to ID myself but I can’t because I was never given a bracelet with my info on it. Leaves to get nurse.

-Nurse shows up with my bracelet.

-Phlebotomist can now take my blood.

-The room starts to spin, I feel dizzy and ask the Phlebotomist to bring me water on his way out. He agrees.

-Ultrasound tech is done. Hallelujah.

-Nurse brings me water and snacks because I haven’t eaten since noon {and it’s now nearly 6pm.}

-I eat and drink almost everything–2 big glasses of water, 1/2 a gingerale, a cheese stick, a pudding cup and 2 graham crackers. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again–people who don’t feed pregnant ladies {read: ME} seriously are asking for a death wish.

-Nurse comes back in and tells me I need to drink more and then empty my bladder because I’m starting to have contractions.

-My contractions go away.

-I wait some more.

-I hear a lady’s water break in the triage room next door. I laugh a little at how awkward the whole situation was/how unhelpful her husband/boyfriend/man friend was.

-I buzz the nurse to see how much longer I need to wait.

-She talks to me and says she needs to go talk to the doctor who is at another Emergency. Tells me to wait. I start having more contractions again. I drink more and go potty.

-Nurse comes back and says the Doctor has okay-ed me to go home even though she thought for sure I’d have to stay the night for observation. Placenta appears to be just fine. Baby is just fine. I’m very anemic. I need to take more iron supplements. I need to stay off my feet, quit walking as much as possible and rest until my actual doctor can see me and do a follow up exam.

-I change into my normal clothes and wait for the nurse to let me go. I sign some papers and waddle back to my car.

-I drive home, and pull into my driveway around 7:30.

That’s how my Tuesday went down. Sooooo yeah. Polyps. That’s apparently where the bleeding is coming from. It’s nothing to do with the baby. It’s just my weird body. Awesome. Any of you ever had this before? It’s all new to me! Whenever blood comes out of places it shouldn’t be coming out of during pregnancy, I get crazy. Like “it took me forever to get pregnant, I’ve made it this far in the pregnancy and now I’m going to loose the baby?” That is seriously my thought process. Everything is gloom and doom until I’m reassured that everything is fine.

So, by the end of my hospital stay, I was reassured. The ultrasound was good for me to see. The tech even spent a good five minutes trying to get me a picture of the baby’s face. YOU GUYS. He is so so cute ๐Ÿ™‚ He had the cutest cheeks and nose! He was yawning, rubbing his eyes and had his hands up around his cheeks! I’m SO excited to see what this little guy looks like in person and not just on a screen. According to his measurements, he is right on for being born 04/29 and weighs about 2 pounds 13 ounces which is approximately the 65th percentile for 29 week old babies so he’s healthy! The tech also asked me how tall my husband and I were because apparently his femur bone was measuring on the shorter side. Maybe he won’t be the tallest boy, but he’ll definitely be the cutest ๐Ÿ™‚

Other than this drama filled day, I’ve been laying low, sitting on the couch a lot, lying in bed, taking naps, making crockpot dinners, and baking sitting down. My husband is pretty strict and will get mad at me if he sees me doing dishes, giving my daughter a bath or standing for any extended periods of time. It’s really nice to not have to worry about anything but myself and the baby {and my 4 year old…}

So, that’s where I’m at now. Doing as little as possible. Kind of boring, but thankful that nothing more serious was going on. Hopefully the last 10 weeks of this pregnancy will be much less interesting….

    Yep, had polyps (described to me as little fingers hanging in my uterus trying to get out of my cervix lol) Those little buggers cause alot of bleeding but don’t think they will bother a pregnancy! Happy to hear your baby is healthy! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

    Praying for you Lauren. I know how scary all that can be. Hopefully the last bit of your pregnancy will be easy. Careful with those iron pills though, they make ya constipated which won’t be fun for polyps. I drank metamucil, ate the crackers, and lived on water and apples while I was pregnant and it helped a little because I was anemic too and was on iron. Actually, I still am. I had my son just about 8 weeks ago and I have to stay on the iron for an addition 6 months. Oh joy!

    I am so glad everything turned out okay. Your little guy is a great size, we are one week ahead and measuring 3 lbs 8 oz!! and both Dad and I are under 5′ 5″.
    I hope this week is uneventful and restful

    Happy for you that all is okay. I have three kids and our one and only son….when I was pregnant with him, I had similar issues–spotting, contractions, your placenta is covering your cervix, oh, now it’s not—Due date comes and goes…I have all these contractions for months and now, he doesn’t want to come out?. I’m induced and he’s got nurses and doctors running all over the place…he came out perfect, even if he did have everyone in a panic for a while. As he grows he continues to cause doctors to give pause (not growing, celiac, ADD (possible Aspergers), various trips to the ER, etc…..This year, he’ll be 14…And our Sammy is so much fun..such a sweetheart, makes us laugh, and want to strangle him at the same time!…Those boys, they want to cause an uproar where ever they go! Praying the rest of your pregnancy and birth go very smoothly! Loving the preg updates, and of course, yummy recipes!

    Glad to hear that baby is doing good. Hang in there, enjoy the quiet time, seriously! I was on bed rest with number 2 and it was so hard to just sit around but now I look back and think “Why didn’t I read more!?!” ? Even watch shows you like, cuz when he gets here, time will fly and you will be so busy with two.

    Lauren! I am so glad to hear everything is okay! But geeze…SCARRY! I can’t wait for you to have your cute little boy here, hopefully he will wait one day and come on my birthday ๐Ÿ™‚ (and by a day I mean 12:00 am sharp on the 30th.) Rest and take it easy!

  13. Keeley @ My Life on a Plate

    Whew! So glad everything is okay. I was worried when I saw that first photo. People take their own health and the health of their babies for granted sometimes. I had my baby at 36 weeks and it was scary enough… I can’t imagine how you felt sitting in triage (hungry!) and waiting for answers.
