Why You’ll Love This Recipe!

I remember being a little girl and watching my mom make her recipe for apple crumble which was heavy on the apples and very light on the crumble and I remember thinking what a travesty it was. I was probably 5.

So, as an adult armed with a decent amount of kitchen knowledge, I took matters into my own hands promising myself that I would create a recipe that even I, the cooked fruit hater, could love.

And I did it! I took it pretty easy on the apples, doubled the normal amount of crumble topping, and was quite heavy-handed with the warm salted caramel sauce for the ultimate fall dessert that everyone and their mom will love. So let’s make this baby!

What Kind of Apples are Best to Use?

For this recipe I used Granny Smith green apples. I love that they are crisp, sweet & tart and hold up really well when cooked. Other good apple options are Honeycrisp, Jonagold and Braeburn apples.

What Type of Pan Should I Use?

I like to use a cast iron skillet. I am able to cook the apples in it on the stove top, then add the caramel and crumble topping to the apples and bake in the oven, all without transferring anything to a different baking dish. A big bonus is less dishes to wash after! If you don’t have a cast iron skillet or other pan that can go in the oven, using a 9×13 casserole dish will work just fine. If you do use a different pan, you’ll need to adjust your baking time.

Ingredients Needed for Caramel Apple Crumble

These common ingredients come together quickly to make one of the best apple desserts! Here is everything you will need.

  • Granny Smith apples – tart, fresh apples that hold their shape when baked
  • Lemon juice – helps keep your apples from turning brown and adds a slight tang
  • Butter – you’ll need it softened for the crumble and melted for cooking the apples
  • Heavy cream – for that rich, silky caramel sauce
  • White sugar and brown sugar – add sweetness and depth to both the apples and crumble
  • All-purpose flour – gives structure to the crumble topping
  • Vanilla extract – because everything’s better with a splash of vanilla
  • Sea salt – a pinch of salt enhances the flavors and balances the sweetness
  • Optional: Cinnamon – sprinkle over the apples for extra warmth

Variations

  • Swap Granny Smith apples for Golden Delicious or Honeycrisp if you prefer a sweeter apple filling.
  • Use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose for a slightly healthier twist on the crumble.
  • Add rolled oats to the crumble topping for a more rustic texture.
  • Want an even easier option? Use store-bought jar of caramel sauce instead of making it from scratch.
  • For a nutty twist, add chopped pecans to the crumble topping for some extra crunch.

How to Make Caramel Apple Crumble

This caramel apple crumble recipe has three main components. The sauce, crumble, and apple filling. Each section needs its own set of ingredients and so I’m going to break it down for you. See the printable recipe card below for full details on ingredients & measurements. Here is step by step what you can expect when making this recipe.

1. Make the Crumble Topping

This is a super easy process where you just measure, dump, and mix. Combine flour, brown sugar, white sugar, butter and salt into a bowl (or stand mixer bowl) and mix. The mixture will be crumbly but stay together when squeezed. Set aside.

2. Make Homemade Caramel Sauce

The hardest part of this recipe is probably making the homemade salted caramel. I’m going to walk you through the steps pretty well but if it still intimidates you in any way, there are plenty of salted caramel sauces on the market which are great options. Even warming up store bought caramel sauce and adding in a little sea salt will work too. Here we go. 🙂

  1. Heat sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat to melt the sugar. Continue cooking and swirling sugar until it turns amber in color.
  2. Whisk in sea salt and heavy cream. The mixture will briefly bubble up violently. Continue whisking until the sauce is smooth.
  3. Stir in butter and vanilla extract. Set aside.

3. Prep Apples + Cook

Prepare apple slices and toss in lemon juice. The best apples to use for this dish are granny smith apples. This is simply because of their taste, texture, and good baking qualities.

Cook apples in a large cast-iron skillet over medium-low heat in butter. Sprinkle with salt to draw out all the moisture possible. Drain apples and place back into skillet. This process should take about 5-7 minutes of cooking.

4. Layer + Assemble Apple Crumble

Pour 3/4 of prepared caramel sauce into the apples and stir gently. Top with the crumble topping.

5. Bake + Serve

Bake at 350° F for 20 minutes or until the top is a light golden brown. Serve with remaining caramel sauce.

Apple Crumble Toppings

Besides the caramel sauce, you can also top this dessert with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Think of it as a deconstructed apple pie. So all that creaminess perfectly compliments this apple crumble recipe.

Storing Leftover Caramel Apple Crumble + Make Ahead Directions

I doubt you’ll have any leftovers because this dessert is SO divine! But if you do, don’t worry. Allow it to cool to room temperature, cover with plastic wrap (or transfer leftovers to an airtight container) and store your apple crumble in the fridge for up to 4 days.

You can reheat it in the microwave for a few seconds at a time or pop it into the oven to warm it up.

To Freeze: Allow apple crumble to cool completely. Place in a freezer safe container with a good fitting lid and store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Allow to thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating in the oven or the microwave. It’s also tasty eaten cold!

Make Ahead

If you want to do the prep work the day before, cover and store the apple filling, crumble topping and caramel separately in the fridge until you’re ready to bake.

This loos utterly delicious, definitely going to give it a try! Apple crumble was one of my favourites growing up – but it’s a long time since I’ve had one as tasty as my mum’s.

I am actually turning this recipe for caramel apple crumble into a dessert imposter. I diced the apples, and separated them into thirds. Used food coloring to dye some green and some red, the rest remained uncolored. My intention is to get it to look like sloppy joes. I also made a spice cake (boxed) and made buns for the sloppy joes in Whoopi pie pans.

Hi there! I was thinking of making this for a dinner party and it would be great to make this ahead of time and just pop it in the oven 20 minutes before serving. Would this work?

Ooof … tried to use Trader Joe’s salted caramel sauce to save some time/labor and it did not work at all. I drained the apples well and added half a jar of the caramel sauce, but the mix came out super watery. The whole thing was cloyingly sweet. 🙁 Heads up guys, don’t stray from the recipe.

This looks amazing, and I cannot wait to make it. However, I will probably use premade caramel sauce (please don’t kill me!!). What would the measurements be for using pre-made caramel sauce? Thanks!!

Omg….making this for supper tonight! It’s in the oven right now and smells delicious. With two 17 yr. old twin boys and a husband, I doubled the recipe…HOPE I GET SOME!!! 😉

  14. Kim Roberts

i don’t have any KitchenAid, but would dearly love some. I’ve made caramel apple butter, a peach jam with cloves and Irish whiskey, a white chocolate and raspberry spread, pink champagne jelly, and a lemon-rose jelly so far this season.

This is a wonderful fall apple recipe and I love salted caramel. Having just gone apple picking, I used Newton Pippin apples instead of the Granny Smith apples. Yummy!!! I am looking forward to making this again soon.

Every Friday some of my coworkers get together for lunch. Each week we take turns bringing something to share. When it’s my week I am bring this!! It looks so good! I’ll have to bake it at my mom’s house. Our oven won’t kick on. Broke this summer and we are trying to decide to remodel the whole kitchen or just get a new oven. Winning one would be awesome!!!

  17. Amy L

I recently typed up 3 family recipes that I learned to make from my mother, who’d learned from my dad’s mother. I learned to make them the way my mom did, which was without measuring, so it was a challenge to figure out how much of each ingredient. I’m so happy I finally did this for my family, and now I want to make a cookbook with all of my favorite recipes.

  18. Luanne Burns

This past weekend I made apple fritters for my husband as a fall treat. Your Salted Caramel Apple Crumble is on tap for this weekend. I am sure glad I have a Kitchen Aid Dishwasher to clean up after all my food adventures!

  19. Linda

I am told that with a KitchenAid I can conquer making bread. I am anxious to try this winter. The Salted Caramel Apple Crumble looks amazing so will be trying that as well.

Made this INCREDIBLE Salted Caramel Apple Crumble using my KitchenAid lift stand mixer! Everyone raved about the crumble, and all that was left were a few crumbs! I had been looking for recipes to use the abundance of apples from my friend’s tree, and this was just the perfect recipe! Thank you!!!

  21. Sandy

Just picked apples at the Applejack Festival so it’s time to try the Carmel apple crumble! Hope it can be made without a KitchenAid–I’ve never gotten one.

  22. catschwartz

I have a very old kitchenaid stand mixer. It has it’s own screw in fuse! When we remodeled our kitchen, we moved the upper cabinets a little higher so I could leave it out all of the time. It is the only mixer I use, so it will be the only one used for this recipe! I also have a Kitchenaid stove/oven, so that will see some use too! thanks for a delicious looking recipe.

  23. Becky Pierce

I really need this Kitchen Aid prize! Just burnt up another mixer! My cooking challenge i recently conquered was pie crusts, I have always had a hard time with it for some reason. My bread, cakes, cookies biscuits turn out fine, but my pie crusts have always been a problem. I practiced, practiced till I got it right. Now with a Kitchen Aid mixer, I can perfect my sourdough bread just in time for fall and winter!

The Apple crumble looks amazing and will be my first Fall recipe of 2014. I just stumbled on your website and looks like it is going to be my new favorite place! Thanks for the video it will be my companion when making this Apple crumble for my family . As for the Kitchen Aid appliances it would be nice to have a few new appliances when making these deserts.

  25. kristen

Wow, this looks fabulous!! My favorite thing to use my KitchenAid for is baking pumpkin rolls, but I would love to try this recipe! My kitchen supplies and gadgets are severely lacking so I would love to win this!

Looking forward to trying this recipe. Last year I ruined my homemade caramel. If I win, I’ll be able to get some awesome stainless steel cookery from KA.

I made this crumble today and it was amazing. Instead of using my stand mixer to make the crumble, I used a couple of butter knives help between my fingers. Popped it into the oven and served with a slice with some vanilla bean ice cream. So good!

  28. Alicia J.

This almost didn’t make it to completion. I broke one of the apple chunks in half and said, let’s just taste the caramel, because I’ve never made caramel before. I was that close to just dumping all the caramel over the apples and eating them that way. I think the biggest challenge for me in the recipe was the caramel. I was unsure of the length of time it would take to turn brown. And once it gets to the browning point it goes quickly. And as soon as I poured the coffee creamer (I didn’t have heavy cream) in it hardened up. I was afraid I did something wrong. But I kept stirring and it smoothed back out. Now it is currently in the oven baking as I type this. I can’t wait to try it. Even have some vanilla ice cream in the freezer that just might have to be scooped on top. Thank you for a wonderful recipe.

  29. Holly Garrison

LOVE the video! LOVE the pic of the apple crumble! LOVE baking! LOVE KitchenAid! I just made my very first empanadas…beef…they were yummy! I also made a strawberry crumble! I can’t wait to try out this recipe…never made homemade salted caramel before. Soooo excited!

My recent conquered challenge was successfully cooking dinner at all in our 90 degree, humid, non-A/C apartment (we just moved to a tropical climate in the middle of the hottest summer ever – it has taken me a while to get motivated to turn on the oven for ANYTHING).

  31. Betsy Gratiot

Oh my gosh, this looks absolutely delicious! Cannot wait to make this. I think I’ll make a “test” pan before making it for Sunday dinner. Apple orchard on Saturday!
