My Summer Snack Boxes are the ultimate Mom hack. Perfect for road trips or days when all you hear is “Mom, I’m hungry”.  Also great for easy lunches or light dinners for little ones.

Snack Box

Let’s talk about this summer hack, the snack box…

Do you hear the words “Mom, I’m hungry!” 74 times a day? Because I do! Ah, summer. What a pain you are.

My response is usually “you just ate breakfast” or “you just ate lunch” or “you just ate dinner”. I’m a little sick of it. So, here is my solution to that question: Summer Snack Boxes! Perfectly portioned fruits, veggies and other snacks for my kids to munch on how and when they please throughout the day. Normally, they will make an appearance once or twice a week because they take several minutes to throw together, but man what a help they are!

These plastic containers are actually bead organizers (whaaaat?!) and I found them for under $4 a piece off Amazon. I did get this smaller one for Eddie too under $2. It was a steal of a deal! After a quick wash through our dishwasher (with the sanitize function), they were good to go. Of course, these aren’t made from ‘food grade plastic’ (simply meaning, you can’t store stuff in here for days on end in the fridge like you could with gladware) but a few hours to keep your kids content, heck yes!

I grabbed snacks I found laying around my house and cabinets and threw them together. Of course, any snacky-type foods you have at your house that you think your kids would like, add those into the mix as well. I usually say something along the lines of “if you want another good snack (crackers, cookies, nuts, basically anything but the veggies), the entire snack box needs to be finished”. Blake likes to not eat green vegetables, but we’re working on that 😉 This rule is super helpful.

Also super helpful? Taking the snack box on road trips!! Are any of you heading out of town via car or minivan in the near future? I’d highly recommend these! We have done this one time prior to when we were in Oregon and we drove down to the Redwoods. It worked out swimmingly.

What’s in our snack boxes:
  • some kind of bar: larabars or z-bars
  • popcorn
  • cashews
  • goldfish crackers
  • chex cereal
  • banana chips
  • teddy grahams
  • pita chips
  • pretzels
  • sugar snap peas
  • carrots
  • cucumber
  • red and green grapes
  • apple slices
  • laughing cow cheese
  • and Oreos

Like I mentioned above, anything will work for this. Just try to make sure what you’re choosing doesn’t get too messy. Sturdier, less juicy fruits and veggies are mainly what I’m referring to.

This is not so much of a recipe as it is a great idea, but there you have it! Snack Boxes that you can make for any kid, any day of the week and have them stay occupied (and allegedly full) for at least 25 minutes 😉

Have a great day, friends!

Tackle boxes and craft organising containers ARE NOT made of FOOD SAFE plastic. Please NEVER do this to your kids if you want them to make it to retirement age without cancer. Make sure the containers you’re buying are specifically designed for food. Is the long-term cancer risk worth saving a few bucks on food containers?

I went to Wal-Mart yesterday and read that warning on the label. No I did not buy it. Looking for good safe snack boxes.

Lauren, I have followed you for years and have tried so many of your recipes! Everything is always so good! I have a child with celiacs so these little snack boxes gave me some great ideas for his lunches! Thank you for sharing all your great ideas! PS, your lil’ family is just adorable!

I did this for my niece and nephews on a long car ride, technically I did one for everyone in the car, they were a hit. Love this idea!

I also created something like this for my nephew’s birthday, he loves fishing and the bead boxes are just like the plastic tackle boxes so I got him a tackle box one (basically the same as the bead box but the inside areas are adjustable) and I filled it with different “fishing” like candies and treats. Him and his brother got to eat the candy, and then fill the tackle box with actual fishing things from a giftcard.

Love it! My hubby actually gave me one last year filled with candy lol. He purchased the box at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Utility box for screws etc.
