This Asian Slaw Recipe with Peanuts is a refreshing new Thai take on the same old coleslaw recipe. This time with a sweet, peanutty kick!

Today I’m sharing a recipe for Asian Slaw. It’s an amazing new way to enjoy coleslaw and it will be the newest, coolest, most delicious thing you could possibly bring to your next potluck, picnic, or BBQ. It’s SO easy to do and a big-time crowd favorite! Even my 9-year-old was asking for seconds! Say whaa? You will absolutely LOVE this.

Main Ingredients Needed

You only need 5 ingredients to make this Asian Slaw (plus a couple more for the dressing, see below). Here are all the fresh veggies you need:

  • Green Cabbage – shredded! You can buy this pre-shredded at the store or buy a whole head and shred it yourself.
  • Red Cabbage – same goes for the red cabbage, shredded. Red cabbage has a slightly bitter taste but it goes so well with the sweeter notes.
  • Carrots – speaking of sweeter notes, shredded carrots! For flavor, texture, and bright color.
  • Scallions – mostly for subtle oniony flavor.
  • Cilantro – if you hate cilantro just leave it out!

How to Make Asian Slaw

Like most salad recipes, this Asian Slaw is easy to throw together! Prepare ingredients, toss, pour over the dressing, toss and sprinkle on toppings! For full details, see the recipe card below.

  1. Start by getting all the main slaw ingredients prepped and ready in a bowl: shredded green and red {except it’s purple} cabbage, shredded carrots, chopped cilantro, and scallions. Give those ingredients a toss and set aside.
  2. Make the super simple dressing (more on that below) and pour overtop!
  3. Toss to coat and then throw in a billion little pieces of peanuts! You had to have seen that coming…Toss everything together and serve!

The Asian Slaw dressing perfectly complements the slaw itself with deep Asian flavors. To make it, simply whisk together these ingredients.

  • Soy Sauce – salty umami flavor! Make sure to use a good quality soy sauce for best results.
  • Canola Oil – to help bring the other liquids together. Any light-colored lightly flavored oil will do here.
  • Truvia – this is a substitute for sugar and is all-natural. If you rather just use sugar here, do that.
  • Fresh Ginger – warm and zesty flavors, but not too much!
  • Garlic – garlic belongs in all savory dishes, so good!!!
  • Sesame Oil – nice sesame infused oil.
  • Salt and Pepper – don’t skip out on these two, they make all the difference.

A note about toppings

If you don’t like using peanuts, feel free to incorporate some peanut butter into the dressing instead. Or, if you really like peanuts, add the peanut butter to the dressing AND the actual peanuts into the slaw. Or consider adding sesame seeds instead of peanuts.

Talk about delicious overload! Yummmm. I love the different elements of crunch with all the other flavors working here.

Leftovers

Asian Slaw is a great salad for leftovers! Make sure to cover in an airtight container and refrigerate. I ate this entire bowl, over the course of 3 days. I am not ashamed.

Asian Slaw Recipe with Peanuts

Ingredients

  • 10 oz green cabbage shredded
  • 10 oz carrot shredded
  • 1/2 small head red cabbage shredded
  • 1 bunch scallions white and greens
  • 1/2 cup cilantro roughly chopped
  • 2/3 cup dry roasted peanuts roughly chopped

Asian Slaw Dressing

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons truvia
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger grated
  • 2 cloves garlic grated or finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Place slaw ingredients into a bowl and toss.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk dressing ingredients together to combine and pour over slaw. Toss to combine. Add in peanuts and toss again. Serve with extra cilantro and peanuts.
  • Store slaw in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.

    Lauren, what could I sub in for the cilantro? Would it work with just leaving it out? I love all the colors and would like to have something green. I’m extremely allergic to cylantro
    . It makes blisters in my mouth. I love the dressing with the use of the trivia.

    Oh Lauren! You and Blake are the walking wounded! My little sister gave herself a black eye when she was 6 by running into a pole in the schoolyard. You can imagine the filthy looks my poor Mum got at the supermarket!

    We love coleslaw. It is easy, quick and healthy. I’ll have to make this one up and serve it with dinner tonight.

    Bummer about the black eye. My first and only bloody nose was from my first born when he was just a wee little thing. Last week I got a fat lip when I was trying to break up a fight between the 11 year old and the 12 year old.

    Raising boys, it is a hazardous job. If someone actually paid us to do it mom’s of boys should get hazardous pay!
