Remember when I told you this story about how I gained the freshman 15 {and then like 7 more} because in college I was introduced to Sonic? I was a sucker for their corn dogs, cherry limeades and onion rings. I was never really a big fan of onion rings before Sonic. And then I moved 0.7 miles away from the blasted drive in….and the addiction started.
Since 2004, I’ve been a bit of an onion ring freak and will always favor them over fries.
Ok, technically that’s not true. 94% of the time I’ll choose them…which in my book might as well be 100%. So, fast forward 8ish years and I’m still daydreaming about onion rings. I’m really mature.
Well, fast forward 8 years and 1 day and guess what? Alexia Foods contacted me and asked me to be a Tastemaker Ambassador. I jumped at the chance because {1} I like Alexia products and buy them a lot {2} they sell onion rings {3} I like their onion rings. I make my decisions based on the important things in life. AS ALWAYS.
So, I made this recipe for Alexia and all my fellow onion ring lovers out there. Cheers to us, my peeps! May the world never get sick of these fried onion babies!
Here’s how you make these:
First thing you’re going to want to do is get some onion rings cooking. I used these panko breaded onion rings from Alexia because they get super crunchy in the oven and are done in 15 minutes. Aaaaand, they taste yummy on this burger.
You’ll also want to get some bacon cooking too. I only used 2 slices for our 2 burgers because these are thick cut slices. Feel free to pile on the bacon as you see fit.
So while those two things are doing their thang, stir up the burger patty mixture. This is how I make 99.9% of all my burgers. I love adding onions and bbq sauce to my patties. I don’t know when or why I started making them this way, but there you have it.
So you can form your meat mixture into two healthy sized burgers and get them into a skillet….or onto a grill. Whatevs. Just make sure you spray your cooking surface with nonstick spray.
Your onion rings should be about done now. Pull those babies out and take a big whiff. Smells good, huh? I love hate onion rings. It was at this point where I stopped taking photos/lost all attention and ate 3/4 of these off the pan….and subsequently burned my fingers and mouth. Smooth Lauren, smooth.
Anyways, I think you can figure out the rest. Take a bun, slap on some toppings, add a burger, more bbq sauce, the bacon and the onion rings and shovel this bad boy into your mouth.
Now, doesn’t that taste like heaven? Thought so.
Red Robin, you ain’t got nothin’ on me.
Just kidding. I have no idea what that means.
Anyways, make these tonight! This is one of the meals I rely on weekly because it is so darn easy and we all LOVE it….especially the onion ring part…but that was just a new addition for today because I love you all. A perfect weeknight meal for all you Moms trying to get back into the groove of back to school. Aaaaand, I knew you’d appreciate the insanity that this burger is. Here’s the printable:
Have a great Monday!
Onion Ring Burger
Ingredients
- 13.5 oz frozen onion rings (1 package) such as Alexia brand
- 2 slices thick cut bacon
- 1/2 lb. ground beef I used 90/10
- 1/4 cup onion finely diced
- 1/4 cup BBQ sauce + more for the burgers
- salt & pepper to taste
- 2 hamburger buns
- lettuce
- tomato
- pickles etc.
Instructions
- Cook onion rings according to package directions. While those are in the oven, cook your bacon to desired doneness and drain on paper towels.
- For the burger patties, in a small bowl, stir ground beef, onions, bbq sauce, salt and pepper together until combined. Divide into two equal patties. Spray a nonstick skillet with cooking spray and cook patties on medium heat for approximately 7 minutes per side. Remove from pan.
- To assemble burgers, place cooked patty onto hamburger buns and top with more bbq sauce, cooked bacon, onion rings and any other desired toppings. Serve immediately with any remaining onion rings and/or fries.
- Disclosure: This recipe was developed on behalf of Alexia. I was given the onion rings from Alexia to develop this recipe. All opinions expressed in this post are my own. I honestly love onion rings. Including the ones from Alexia.

mouthwatering…
Oh man. My favorite thing at Sonic was their Bacon Burger Toaster -thingy. It had onion rings. I always thought their onion rings smelled like the fair. Mmm. And their tator tots (along with Yoplait whips) were the cravings from pregnancy #1. Love the burger, hon. 🙂
Love onion rings, im going to try this one!
This burger looks INTENSELY delish – I love all the flavors and textures going on! And congrats on your partnership with Alexia, Lauren!! Our family LOVES their onion rings and frozen fries!!
This is an all-out delicious looking burger! I love onion rings and have always enjoyed those crispy critters on my burger. PLUS bacon, PLUS pickles…you know your burgers, lady! Despite how thick the burger is, I’d make every attempt to fit the thing in my mouth…might have to squish it down a bit. 😉
onion rings on burgers is one of my favorite things!! so, so good
Gorgeous burger, Lauren. My family always puts tots on our burgers, but I love onion rings, too.

Sonic is the devil! There’s such awesome crap there – greasy as hell – but it’s pretty damn awesome. Anyway, this burger is awesome. I love a burger with onion rings!
We have a slight onion ring addiction here as well. These burgers look perfect!
This looks AMAZING! Perfect game-day food, too. Yum!!
i’m drooling hardcore right now.
Every time I eat onion rings, I think about that summer we somehow got it in our heads that they were low-fat, and we’d go to the sonic by your sisters house sometimes twice a day to eat our “health food.”. Ah . . . Those were simple times . . . .
Those onion rings look SO crispy! Drooling at my desk right now 😛
I have those very onion rings in my freezer! Now to get the rest of the ingredients after being gone for over a month…
Onion rings, bbq sauce and bacon are the perfect additions to any burger. In fact, my favorite burger. And this looks absolutely amazing!!!!!! Mmm. I want it right now.
I give you 5 stars for presentation alone…you make everything look delectable!!!
This is totally something I’d eat! Love it!
My mouth is watering! Totally need this burger. It reminds me of the bacon western cheeseburgers I oft dream of from Carl’s Jr. Delish!
I haven’t been to Sonic in ages! For some reason, I only have Sonic when I’m in Houston and nowhere else..
I have a Sonic just down the street from me now. SO dangerous! And so are these burgers – they look amazing!!
These look like one of the best burgers ever. I need this in my life!!
I love Alexia onion rings! Though I never thought to top a burger with one at home. *Forehead smack*. Doing this soon, very very soon.
Congrats!! That’s so exciting!! I’m excited to see what cool stuff you get to taste in the future!!
I’ll have to look for their onion rings next trip. This burger would be a big hit here!
Never been to Sonic, but loving this idea! 😉
