vanilla cinnamon cake with browned butter frosting

Is anything better than butter? BROWNED BUTTER!

If you’ve never ever made this, and then mixed it into some frosting–you need to stop what you’re doing and go make this right now. I made this cake a few weeks ago for Better Homes and Gardens blog and just DIED over the results. I love the nutty almost maple flavor that the browned butter gives in the frosting. It’s seriously so tasty! Especially with a little dash of cinnamon on top of super moist cake! Mmm….

browned butter

If you’re wanting to brown butter, then all you do is throw some into a small saucepan, place it over medium low heat and watch it like a hawk. Once things start looking all golden, then you’re done! Super simple to do and you’ll be amazed at what a difference it makes in all sorts of recipes.

Get my cake recipe plus this browned butter frosting recipe plus more step-by-step photos here.

Disclosure: Land O’Lakes provided me with the same prize pack as listed above for review and recipe development. All opinions expressed are my own…as usual. And I was not compensated in any way to say nice things about Land O’Lakes.

[…] If you aren’t a vanilla person, like my husband, be sure to give these other frostings a try: Amazing Chocolate Frosting Recipe, Chocolate Sour Cream Frosting, Perfect Cream Cheese Frosting and Vanilla Cinnamon Cake with Browned Butter Frosting. […]

Brown butter anything is incredibly yummy!! I have found that you have to watch it better than a hawk…before it foams, it bubbles violently, and can easily splatter onto skin. Then when it foams, you can’t see that its turning brown unless you stir it. So, stir gently! Lauren, where is the actual recipe, please? Thank you!!

  3. Tammy

Found the recipe for the frosting, but can’t find the cake recipe anywhere. Do you have it posted somewhere? Thanks so much! Looks absolutely delicious!

  4. Allison

What isn’t better with butter? I’d sauté some mushrooms and garlic to add to anything for dinner. I’d make a cake and with some delicious butter based frosting! 🙂

  5. Barbara Harris

I would to make a Brown Butter Zucchini Cake w/ salted caramel. Lots of zucchini this time of the year! Love your recipes & pictures!

  6. Heidi M

Real butter makes everything better! But I’d probably start with pancakes from scratch topped with butter and maple syrup, yum!

  7. Algerine Mitchell

I put brown butter on everything! I already use land o lake butter on toast it’s Devine! And I love making brown butter soft batch ginger snap cookie!(everyone says they are heaven!)

  8. Melissa Vogel

I always make my husband and kids their favorite….pasta tossed with sauteed chicken breast, fresh garlic and onion in olive oil. But if I won this, I would brown some butter and add that also! I think it would make the recipe even better 🙂

  9. Ileana Santiago

Anything baked! My 7 year old has been allergic to eggs since he was born and we have just now been able to start giving him baked goods with eggs! I’m having so much fun making all sorts of treats for him! He just had his first brownie ever!

  10. gg

Not sure if I will make your Vanilla Cinnamon Cake w/Brown Butter Frosting or some other cake, but thinking I need to saute up some shrimp & scallops for sure!

Thank you for all the wonderful ideas and recipes.

  11. Susan Marie

I would make cookies, or Rice Krispie treats (which are awesome made with browned butter!) and take some to my mom, who’s in a nursing home.

  12. Michele

Dinner’s on my mind tonight… How about some savory herb butter to finish beautifully grilled strip steaks, butter-sauteed haricot vert, and big baked potatoes with sea salt and cracked pepper – topped with generous pats of butter. We’ll make sure there’s plenty of soft, creamy butter for the fresh-from-the-oven garlic rolls, too. Better save room for a piece of brandied pear tart with that flaky butter crust that everyone loves so much. Mmmmm… Classic dinner fabulousness!

  13. Danielle

I’ve been thinking of trying to make The Old Spaghetti Factory’s Brown Buttered Mizithra. I’m also trying to perfect my homemade alfredo. Yum!

Thank you so much for reminding me. Today is her birthday and I am inspired to make a special cake in her honor for our dessert tonight.
Thanks again for the blast from the past!

  140. Jordan

I’ve never tried making browned butter before so if I were to win, I think trying out this frosting would be perfect!

  141. Shanda J.

I would make the brown butter frosting along with one of my cream cheese pound cakes to see how great they would taste in harmony. It would be bliss!

  142. Hayley

I would definitely make something sweet…I’ve been wanting to try a flourless chocolate cake. I’ve never made one, but the ones I’ve eaten have been so yummy and fudgy! 🙂

  143. Avery's Grandma, Lynn Benner

What would I make with BUTTER???????? Everything is good. I’m down south in Mississippi for my Daughters wedding, and the food is soooooooooo melt-in-your-mouth delish!!

Lauren, I’d start with your wonderful “Vanilla Cinnamon Cake with Browned Butter Frosting”, then move onto your Cinnamon Rolls, and if I had any butter left, I’d make a big ole pan of Southern Grits. Seems my 5 mo granddaughter loves them!!!

Lauren, I love your page, the recipes are so yummy!!

  144. Natalie J Vandenberghe

I’ve never made brown butter. I’m sure your frosting is delicious–thanks for sharing the recipe! I think I’d like to try some brownies or cookies. We love Land O’Lakes butter! Thanks for the giveaway.

  145. Irma

I would love to make some sauteed fresh vegetables in butter and some of those great chicken breasts I keep seeing in the saute express from the commercial! Looks great!

  147. Ina

Wow another great give away….I would make Amish Buttered noodles….. 😉 just because my husband & I were talking about making them for concessions we are doing at a concert center.

  148. jackie

I would definitely use that saute to make some delicious fish or chicken! Those are a great idea and an easy weeknight dinner for me and my other half!

  149. suez

Browned butter is seriously yummy! I like it over veggies, whipped with unbrowned butter as a fresh hot bread spread, and in baked goods of all kinds…choc chip cookies with browned butter-OMG!

  150. Liz

every time I see the commercial for the Saute Starters I want to buy them! I’d love just just throw some of them in with some chicken and veggies and call that dinner!

  151. Emily

Found you through Pinterest and had to subscribe to your posts! Really enjoy your creations. I am a die-hard butter user, so pretty much everything I bake uses butter!!! That brown butter frosting sounds delicious! I think I would make some lemon curd using the butter…I’ve been craving it and some lemony white chocolate scones to go with the curd. Thanks for the inspirational posts!

  152. Gina Gearhart

Made this cake yesterday as soon as I saw the blog post! Would use these prizes to make another one! Very good and I never thought about using browned butter in my sweets! Very good!

  153. Angela Evans

I would make some type of cake with a wonderful swiss meringue buttercream 🙂 Land O’Lakes is the only butter I use for my baking!

  154. Val

The first thing I’d try would be this cake! I’ve made brown butter before but that particular recipe was incredibly fussy, and it didn’t exactly showcase the flavour of the browned butter. This cake looks very simple, and the icing is made to show off how beautiful brown butter tastes. Looks perfect. I think I’m going to have to make this today.

  155. rhonda_g

I have never tried browning butter before…. but i would love to make triple chocolate chip cookies and try it out!!!!

  156. Lisa

I’d probably make the Pioneer Woman’s Best Frosting You’ve Ever Had. I’m pretty stuck on it. Whipped, creamy, sweet without being sickening, buttery and delicious.

  163. vicki terpstra

I love baking with butter. Cookies esspecially are so much better when made with butter. I would for sure make a huge batch of chocolate chip cookies since I’ve been craving them, but first I would have to make that cake with this frosting. I’ve never tried browned butter so what better time to try than now.

Well I had ankle surgery on Feb 15 and have been using crutches every since and this Friday they said I could start walking (walking cast that I got last Friday). I haven’t been able to bake or do anything in the kitchen so if I win I plan on making cookies for my husband as he has been great these last few weeks.

  166. Maggie

Well, that cake you made looks pretty good, so if I win, I might try to make that. Or maybe some Almond Butter Crunch Toffee….. yum!

  167. Rachel

  169. Becky

What would I make? A batch of chocolate chip cookies? Cinnamon rolls? Or maybe the ooey gooey butter cake that’s been on my baking list?

  178. Mary B.

I would definitely make this cake! It has my favorite things: vanilla, cinnamon, browned butter…my birthday is coming up and I think this is what I will make for it, even if I don’t win! 🙂

  179. Beth

I have a wonderful recipe for a pear tart that uses browned butter. I would love to make that. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

  183. Vicky T

Love love butter and its actually good for your heart contrary to popular belief. NEVER use margarine or processed vegetable oils! BAD, BAD, BAD!
I think my fav way to have butter is on warm from the oven homemade bread….it doesn’t get any better than that IMO.

  184. Katherine R. @ Tar Heel Taste Bud

In addition to this delicious cake – LOVE the flavors – I’d love to make a banana cake I’ve been eyeing for Easter! Thanks for hosting another great giveaway 🙂

  185. Laura

  194. Lisa

I made a browned butter pumpkin cake last fall, but I think the
pumpkin hid the butter flavor. I’d love to do the banana cake with browned butter icing, although I’m intrigued by the idea of chocolate chip cookies made that way……

  195. Katie

Well, this cake looks really awesome, but I’d use my butter to make your banana cake with browned butter frosting. It’s one of the favorites in our house!

  199. Sarah

I am literally…as in RIGHT now…on my way home from Afghanistan and have been deprived of fresh vegetables for MONTHS. I found this AWESOME recipe for brown butter garden vegetable pasta skillet that I have been dreaming about–even if “garden vegetables” aren’t necessarily in season, I’m sure they will be far more fresh than whatever mass-thawed frozen vegetable selection I have been eating!

  200. Nancy

I’ve never made browned butter, but you describe it deliciously and now I must try. I think this cake sounds like a great way to sample the flavor of the browned butter, or maybe it would be nice drizzled over a zuchini bundt cake
