Ingredients Needed for Key West Key Lime Pie

This is the best key lime pie recipe with a simple ingredients list. Use room temperature ingredients to ensure you get the smoothest pie filling. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Graham Cracker Crumbs – every good key lime pie starts out with a graham cracker crust. You can crush your own graham crackers using a food processor or just buy the pre-crushed package.
  • Butter – to hold the graham cracker crumbs together.
  • Granulated Sugar – to sweeten the crust slightly.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk – this reacts to the acid from the lime juice to become thick. It also helps sweeten.
  • Large Egg Yolks – to ensure the filling will set after baking.
  • Lime Juice – fresh lime juice is best. You can choose to use key limes here to stick to the classic pie or use regular limes.
  • Key Lime Zest – once again, fresh is best.
  • Whipped Cream – this is an optional garnish that is sure to make your pie look amazing. Store bought or homemade whipped cream is totally fine!

Variations:

  • Crust: Swap graham cracker crumbs with crushed gingersnaps.
  • Lime juice: Use Persian limes or bottled Key lime juice if fresh Key limes are unavailable.
  • Topping: Top with meringue instead of whipped cream for a lemon meringue pie twist.
  • Flavor: Add a bit of sour cream to the filling for extra creaminess.

1. Preheat Oven + Prep Pie Plate

Preheat oven to 350° F. You’ll need a standard size pie plate. I used a glass one.

While crust is baking, combine sweetened condensed milk, egg yolks, lime juice and lime zest together with a hand mixer or stand mixer with whisk attachment until creamy and smooth.

Once crust is pulled out of the oven, pour in filling, smooth the top. Return to the oven and bake for another 15-20 minutes or until set.

Remove pie from oven and cool completely on a wire rack before covering with plastic wrap and refrigerating. To serve, cut pie into eight even pieces and top with fresh whipped cream.
