These are seriously hot messes of deliciousness.
Fo’reals.
Ugly, yes.
Gross? Pshhhhhh…..
Sometimes the ugliest food in the world is the tastiest. It’s like an unspoken rule of the universe {and perhaps the food blogging community}.
Pretty food can taste good too, I suppose, but I’m not very good at making super pretty food that looks profesh….because I’m soooooo not profesh.
**My use of the word profesh proves that fact. I can’t even use the word professional in a proper sentence. Except for that last sentence.
ANYWAYS, this stuff is seriously divine and doesn’t take a rocket scientist to throw together. 30 minutes tops? I ended up baking a batch of my fail-proof pizza dough in the shape of hoagies making this whole process a little longer {annoying my starving husband and father-in-law who were tearing apart my kitchen} but I think the fresh bread made this worth it. Nothing beats fresh bread.
Except fresh bread topped with meatballs, hot and bubbly mozzarella and slices of pepperoni. –>clearly I was craving meat and cheese. Are you drooling yet? Excellent 🙂
If you wanted to be lazy, you could just buy hot dog buns or other hoagie rolls and toast them up before using.
If you wanted to be REALLY lazy, you could buy the precooked meatballs in the freezer section and warm those up in a little pizza sauce and call it a day.

Here’s the handy dandy printable! Enjoy 🙂

Pepperoni Pizza Meatball Sandwich
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/4 cup finely diced onion
- 1 clove garlic grated
- salt & pepper to taste
- 1/2 pound ground beef I used 93/7
- 1 1/2 cups pizza sauce homemade or store bought
- 1/2 cup water optional--use if your sauce is thick
- 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
- 16 slices pepperoni
- 4 hot dog or hoagie rolls - or make your own using my pizza dough recipe
Instructions
- Preheat olive oil in large skillet over medium heat. Combine onion, garlic, salt, pepper and ground beef together in a large bowl. Form into small meatballs and place into hot pan. Cook about 2 minutes per side until browned. Reduce heat and stir in pizza sauce. Gently coat meatballs in sauce, adding in water where necessary to thin sauce. Cover to keep warm until meatballs are thoroughly cooked.
- To assemble sandwiches, preheat broiler to high. Open hoagie rolls and place 4-5 meatballs and sauce in each. Top with 1/4 cup mozzarella cheese and 4 pepperoni slices. Broil until cheese is melted and pepperoni is sizzling. Serve hot.
Dear Lauren,
WHY did you replace the Turkey Meatball & Mozzarella Sandwiches with this recipe?
The Turkey Meatball & Mozzarella Sandwiches were FANTASTIC! Please repost them.
I don’t have a recipe for turkey meatball and mozzarella sandwiches?! This has been the recipe on my site since 2017!

Hi Lauren. First off, I love your recipes. My husband and I have liked every one that we’ve tried. I just have one question about this recipe. Is the amount of ground beef supposed to be more than a 1/2 lb? The meatballs are on the stove right now, but I was only able to make 6 small meatballs. This is totally fine since I didn’t want to make a huge batch, but it doesn’t seem like enough to fill four rolls.
My meatballs were rounded tablespoonfuls. Were yours slightly bigger than that?
These look incredible! Do you deliver to midtown Manhattan? 🙂
I agree! Nothing is better than fresh bread! These look delicious!
Holy Hoagie! These look amazingly gooey and messy and delicious!

Oh wow!!! Those look hearty, filling, and mouth-watering!
Why am I sitting here reading your blog when I’m starving and 31 weeks pregnant?? i’m getting a little cranky now knowing I can’t have this pizza meatball hoagie for dinner tonight. Might have to send the hubs out for meatballs and rolls. 😉
Ya! DO IT! It’s what husbands are for! LOL!
Looks darn good to me! I’ll take 856 of these, please and thank you! I’m a total sucker for a messy sandwich!
Oh these are so up my ally! And I’m with Karly, that first picture makes you wanna attack it:)
These look yummilicious!!!!! 🙂
STOP IT. You had me at ooey gooey.
🙂
I’ve got my napkin armed and ready!
Oh. Yes. This recipe is right up my alley! Pass those napkins!
I don’t think they are ugly at all! Yum yum
Ohhh these look so good and messy in a good way!
I think this is pretty! I just made cabbage rolls… that is an awesome recipe, but not pretty at all! This meal is like my husband’s dream come true!!!
That first picture? I just attacked it with my face. GORGEOUS.
I LOVE your pizza dough and use it every week! I love how well it freezes!
How many rolls do you make out of a batch and how long do you bake them and at what temperature?
I can’t wait to give these a try…with a bib on, of course 😉
Ok, out of 1 recipe of dough, I divided it into four and form them into hoagie shaped rolls. Then baked at 350 for about 20 min. Cool 10 minutes so you can handle them, slice ’em down the center and top with the meatballs, cheese and pepperoni!! Super yummy 🙂
Awesome! Thanks, Lauren!
Using the word ‘profesh’ is totes unprofesh. That sandwich on the other hand…yummy!
Seriously drooling over here!
Pepperoni on a meatball sub?! You’re a genius, Lauren!
When it comes to meatball subs – the uglier, the better.
