Rainbow Muddy Buddies

Rainbow Muddy Buddies

Rainbow Muddy Buddies is a fun spin-off of my classic Puppy Chow Recipe that is perfect for St. Patricks Day, Easter or just because! Basically, you can customize this sweet treat for any major {or minor!} holiday and everyone will love it. It’s strangely addicting and super simple to throw together! I had all 6 colors done in about 40 minutes…and that was going slow with kids helping.

Main Ingredients Needed

Addicting, sweet, delicious, this is dangerous territory. Plus Muddy Buddies only take three ingredients to make. Here’s what you’ll need to make this sinful treat:

  • Chex Cereal – use rice or corn-based cereal for this treat. Muddy Buddies is a naturally gluten-free snack, yay!
  • Candy Melts – have fun with the colors!
  • Powdered Sugar – this coats every single piece of cereal to make it (somewhat) less messy and delicious.

How to Make Muddy Buddies

  1. In a large bowl, melt candy melts in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds.
  2. Toss with cereal until well coated.
  3. Measure powdered sugar into a large ziplock bag and add the candy melt coated Chex to the bag. Seal and shake well.
  4. Pour onto a baking sheet or counter lined with wax paper and spread out to create a thin layer*. Cool completely, then break any large pieces apart.
  5. Mix with other colors and serve!

*The only thing you need to be careful of is making sure you spread these out in one even layer to dry/cool. You can’t cake on the powdered sugar or else you won’t be able to see the colored candy melts, so I added a minimal amount to make the color still visible. Meaning: some of these pieces might stick to each other after they cool, so do your best to spread them out to avoid that. Though….they will come apart with some gentle coaxing 🙂

How Long Will Muddy Buddies Last?

At room temperature, muddy buddies will last up to 10 days. In the fridge, it should last closer to two weeks.

That is if you can stop snacking on it. SO deliciously addicting!

Leftovers

I have found the easiest and best way to store this recipe is spooning it right back into a large Ziploc bag. It’s airtight and can fit on any cupboard or shelf. Some people like their muddy buddies cold, so it is totally okay to store it in the fridge!

If you’re giving as gifts, cellophane bags tied very tightly with ribbon will work as well. Makes for a great make-ahead gift.

These are super cute. We are half Irish in my family and definitely celebrate the holiday. My nieces both Irish dance, my brother in-law is active with his local AOH (Ancient Order of Hibernians) chapter, so yea, this is perfect for our kiddos (and adults). Thanks!

You can get candy melts at any craft store in the candy making section. They come in 8 ounce bags usually. They are circular in shape and have a little curl on top of each piece. You can use candy melts to make candy lollipops or lots of things. But my question on this recipe…can we use peanut butter to make them a true muddy buddies snack? I need to post that question. Check out Michaels Craft store for candy melts.
