But Wait, What is Taco Dip?

Taco Dip, also known as “Mexican Layered Dip” or “7 Layer Dip“, is a popular appetizer or snack made of refried beans, cream cheese, sour cream, shredded cheese, and toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, olives and green onions, served chilled. Typically served with tortilla chips or crackers, but you can also serve it with fresh veggies such as carrots, celery, or bell peppers. Whip this up in about 10 minutes and bring to your next potluck or Super Bowl party! It’s sure to be a crowd pleaser.

How to Make Taco Dip

This recipe calls for taco seasoning. While using store bought is totally fine, I highly recommend making your own and using it here. I have a wonderful homemade taco seasoning recipe that is a cinch to mix up.

For full recipe details, including measurements and ingredients needed, see the printable recipe card down below. Here is step by step what to expect when making this recipe:

taco dip ingredients

Spread out Bean Layer

Open refried beans can and spread into the bottom of a medium baking dish. I used an 8×8 glass dish.

Make Cream Cheese Mixture

With a hand mixer, in a small bowl beat the cream cheese until smooth. Should only take 1 minute if softened. Add sour cream and taco seasoning and continue mixing for another minute. Scrape sides of bowl with a rubber spatula and give one more good mix until well combined.

Spread cream cheese mixture into baking dish on top of bean layer.

Add Shredded Cheese + Other Toppings

Sprinkle shredded cheese over cream cheese mixture. Top with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, black olives and green onions.

Chill until ready to Serve

Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with corn tortilla chips.

Topping Variations

You can definitely change this recipe or add more toppings to make this dip recipe your own and make it perfect for your family and friends.

Add your favorite veggies – in addition to the topping I added, this dip would also be great topped with green peppers, jalapeños, avocado, or cilantro. Add whatever you like.

Top with salsa or guacamole – add your favorite salsa of choice, guacamole or taco sauce.

Add some protein – add some protein by adding cooked and seasoned ground beef, chicken or pork. I would recommend adding this right after the refried beans layer.

Make Ahead + Storage Directions

Can I make this dip ahead of time?

Yes, you can make this taco dip in advance. I would suggest making it the day before serving.

After serving, Taco Dip can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.

How long can taco dip sit out at room temperature?

You can let the dip safely sit out for 2 hours. After that, cover it (or transfer it to a container) and put it in the refrigerator.

Can I Freeze Taco Dip?

Technically yes, you can. I don’t necessarily recommend freezing anything with sour cream or cream cheese as the texture will change and might leave your dip grainy and separated. If you choose to freeze it, make sure it’s in an airtight container. Taco Dip will stay fresh in the freezer for 2-3 months. Allow to defrost overnight in the fridge.
