Ingredients Needed for Easter Dirt Cake
Grab your ingredients and get ready to whip up a batch of Easter magic with this Easter version of a classic no bake dessert!
- Oreo Cookies + Butter: crushed Oreos and melted butter combined together create the crust.
- Heavy Whipping Cream + Vanilla extract + Powdered Sugar: ingredients needed to make the whipped cream.
- Cream Cheese + Powdered Sugar: for the cream cheese layer. Make sure cream cheese is softened at room temperature.
- Vanilla Instant Pudding Mix + Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix + milk: Whisked together to make the pudding layer. I used whole milk.
- Easter Bunny Peeps, Sweetened + shredded coconut, Mini Cadbury Eggs, Jelly Beans or other Easter candies: For adorable decorations!
Variations:
- Oreos: I don’t recommend using double stuffed or mega stuffed Oreos for this recipe. The cream cheese layer becomes too greasy with all that extra cream, causing the crust to be too wet. You can try using a different flavor of Oreos for a fun spin on the original version.
- Pudding Mix Flavors: I love the combination of chocolate and vanilla in this recipe, but feel free to use what you have on hand or would prefer. Using two boxes of chocolate or dark chocolate would make an amazing chocolate lasagna as well.
- Swap out Peeps for gummy worms: for a spookier version at Halloween.
How to Make Easter Dirt Cake
Although it does take some time, this is a super easy recipe to put together. This dessert is made in layers and placed in the fridge after each layer is added, while we make the next layer. First we create the Oreo crust, then make homemade whipped cream. We will be dividing the whipped cream and add half of it to the 2nd layer and the other half for the topping. The second is our cheesecake, followed by our vanilla and chocolate pudding for the 3rd layer. The top layer is the other half of whipped cream and Oreo crumbles. Let it all firm up nicely in the fridge and you’ll be all set – literally!
For full recipe details, including ingredient measurements see the printable recipe card down below. Here is step-by-step instructions for making this delicious Easter dessert:
1. First Layer- Prepare the Oreo Cookie Crust
Pulverize Oreos in a food processor until crumbled to fine crumbs. Slowly pour melted butter into Oreos and pulse food processor until well combined.
Pro Tip: If you do not have a food processor you can crumble your cookies by placing inside a ziplock bag and hitting with a mallet or rolling pin. Fine crumbs are what you are looking for. Then just stir in the melted butter.
Reserve a handful of Oreo crumbs to sprinkle on top. Press remainder of buttered cookie crumbs into a 9×13 glass baking dish with clean hands or an offset spatula. Place in refrigerator to chill while making the next layer.
2. Make Homemade Whipped Cream (to be divided in half)
Cream together by combining heavy cream, powdered sugar and vanilla in a large bowl and beat with a stand mixer or hand mixer until soft peaks form. Divide in half and set aside.
Pro Tip: The whipped cream used for this is my homemade whipped cream recipe. I doubled it for this recipe to have enough to divide it between the cream cheese layer and for the topping. You can substitute Cool Whip whipped topping if you please.
3. Second Layer- Create the Cream Cheese Mixture
Mix softened cream cheese and powdered sugar, then fold in half of the whipped cream. Spread over the Oreo crust layer. Place in refrigerator to chill while making the next layer.
4. Third Layer- Make the Chocolate Pudding Layer
Whisk together the vanilla and chocolate pudding mixes with milk for 2 minutes.
Spread pudding mixture over the cream cheese layer. Cover and place in the fridge to chill for at least 10 minutes.
Pro Tip: The type of pudding you use matters!! Make sure you’re using instant pudding mix, not the cook and serve kind. Instant pudding does not need to be cooked before using. Cook & Serve pudding does need to be heated on the stove first before using.
5. Fourth Layer- Finish with Remaining Whipped Cream
Spread remaining whipped cream over the pudding layer and sprinkle with remaining crushed Oreos.
Time to Decorate!
Pour coconut shreds into a small bowl. Add a few drops of green food coloring and stir until your desired color is achieved. If using a gel food coloring, add a few drops of water along with it.
Decorate top of cake with coconut shreds for the “grass” and then add your Peeps, mini Cadbury eggs and jelly beans. Get creative! Serve chilled.
Make Ahead + Storage Directions for Easter Dirt Cake
Because this dessert is stored in the fridge anyway, it makes it easy to make this a day before you want to serve it. Be sure to cover it with a tight fitting lid or plastic wrap to keep it fresh. I would suggest waiting to decorate it with peeps, mini cadbury eggs, jelly beans etc until right before you’re ready to serve it.
To store leftovers, cover or transfer to an airtight container and place back in the fridge for up to 4-5 days. I’m guessing it won’t last that long though. 😉
To Freeze: Cover and place in the freezer for up to 2 months. To thaw, allow to sit in the fridge overnight before serving.
