Ingredients Needed for Stir Fry
Here’s what you’ll need to make this easy chicken stir fry:
- Olive Oil: For sautéing the chicken and onion.
- Onion: Adds a sweet and savory base to the dish. Feel free to substitute frozen onions to keep with the theme.
- Skinless Chicken Breasts: Cut into small pieces for even cooking.
- Frozen Stir Fry Veggies: I love using an Asian Medley mix from the grocery store.
- Stir Fry Sauce Ingredients:
- Chicken stock
- Sweet chili sauce
- Soy sauce
- Brown sugar
- Sesame oil
- Dried ginger
- Cornstarch (to thicken)
- Salt and black pepper
Stir Fry Recipe Variations
- Swap chicken for shrimp, tofu, or beef for a different protein option.
- Add fresh vegetables like red bell peppers, snap peas, or baby corn for extra crunch. Bok choy, broccoli stem, or bean sprouts are also great options. You can also use mixed vegetables from the frozen aisle.
- Add Water Chestnuts, for added crunch.
- Use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce for a gluten-free alternative.
- Toss in cooked rice noodles or serve with rice vinegar for a fun twist.
How to Make Stir Fry
For full recipe details, including ingredient measurements, see the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. Here are my step by step directions for making this stir fry with frozen vegetables:
1. Cook the Chicken
In a large, nonstick skillet, heat olive oil over medium high heat. Add in onion and chicken, season with salt and black pepper to taste, and cook 3-5 minutes or until browned and cooked thoroughly.
2. Add Veggies
Stir in frozen veggies. Heat through.
3. Make the Sauce
In a small bowl, whisk chicken stock, sweet chili sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, dried ginger, cornstarch, salt, and black pepper together until smooth.
Pro Tip: Before adding salt to the sauce, be sure to taste your sauce as soy sauce is quite salty. Opt for a low-sodium soy sauce if you want to have more control over the saltiness.
4. Combine
Pour the sauce over the chicken and veggies, stirring to coat. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium. Let the sauce thicken for 2-3 minutes.
5. Serve
Spoon over white rice, brown rice or cauliflower rice and garnish with sesame seeds or green onions.
What is the Best Side Dish for Stir Fry?
The best side dish for stir fry depends on your preferences and the flavors you’re going for. Here are some great options:
- White Rice: A classic choice that soaks up the flavorful sauce perfectly.
- Brown Rice: A more nutritious alternative with a nutty flavor and extra fiber.
- Cauliflower Rice: Low-carb and light, it pairs well with the bold flavors of stir fry. Or try my Cauliflower Fried Rice.
- Fried Rice: Always a great compliment to stir fry!
- Rice Noodles: These chewy noodles add a fun texture and work well with stir fry sauce.
- Quinoa: For a protein-packed twist, quinoa is a great option.
- Steamed Vegetables: Yes, more veggies!! Keep it simple with steamed broccoli, snap peas, or green beans for extra veggies on the side.
- Asian-Inspired Salads: A crunchy Asian Slaw with sesame oil and rice vinegar makes a refreshing contrast.
- Egg Rolls or Spring Rolls: These crispy treats are a fun addition for a takeout-style meal.
- Crab Rangoon: The perfect appetizer for your stir fry!
Storage Directions for Stir Fry
Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Your recipe sounds excellent so I want to ask if you have a similar for sirloin strips?
Thank you
You can definitely use this same recipe/method with beef as well! Just use beef stock in place of the chicken stock.
If you only look at a person’s appearance, you will probably be disappointed, but if you look at a person the way you want, then they will definitely become the person you expect.

I made this yesterday for my 3 teen-aged grandchildren and got raves from them. the oldest boy (16) doesn’t like vegetables except broccoli, so I added extra frozen broccoli to the mix and picked out some of the other vegetables for his serving. Worked out great. He had 3 helpings! Thanks for publishing this recipe, I will be using it often

Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
What if I don’t have sesame oil what can I use instead?
There really is nothing like it to use as a substitute. If you don’t have it, just leave it out.
Oooops, please excuse me! I see that Lauren responded to my first request for info….now that I just submitted a second. SO sorry! Thanks, Lauren. I love your blog!
Please….what is sweet chile sauce? Something like adobo only sweeter? I have everything else I need to make this tasty-looking dish EXCEPT that! And if someone could help with a possible substitute for sweet chile sauce in case I can’t find it in my grocery store, that would be great. I live in a remote area where there are no Asian specialty stores or anything similar. Thanks!
Found a recipe this morning went to store and got all ingredients. Cannot find directions. It’s the chicken skewers with the Asian BBQ sauce. Please help 😉
Your homemade stir-fry sauce looks great and, best of all, contains everyday ingredients I always keep on hand (unlike most oriental-themed recipes). Plus frozen veggies are a Godsend! Saving this recipe for my next quickie supper, thank you!
We must shop the same then 🙂 I love recipes I don’t have to think about!
Dried ginger,? Sweet chile sauce ? Dying to make this but not familar with these. Not ground ginger?
Dried ginger = ground ginger. I use the spice, not fresh.
Sweet chile sauce {or sometimes spelled sweet chili sauce} is an orangy-pink sauce that is found in the asian foods section.
Use frozen chopped onion, too!
I will definitely add this to my meal plan for next week! I’m desperately in need of quick dinner ideas, and I greatly appreciate your humorous and honest posts about life as a mom!
I do the same thing! We serve it over angel hair pasta but rice looks delicious, too. I love how easy that veggie mix makes it to create a quick stir fry.
