Taco Sloppy Joes | The Best of Two Worlds

My kids ate Taco Sloppy Joes, mostly because there were bread and cheese involved {that is a dominant trait they inherited from me, lucky ducks} but they loved piling on the lettuce, guacamole, and meat and gobbling it up. I was shocked because they really LOVE my regular sloppy joes, but they loved these too. So, this is me winning at motherhood right here with another messy yet satisfying recipe. Make it and be amazed.

Main Ingredients Needed

Here is everything you’ll need to start on these messy but oh so tasty Taco Sloppy Joes!

  • Olive Oil – this is used for sauteing and cooking.
  • Onions + Garlic – two basic but flavorful ingredients that make a great base for any meal.
  • Ground Turkey – I used 99% fat-free. Feel free to use ground beef if you’d like.
  • Tomato Sauce – this is just regular ol’ tomato sauce you’d find in the canned section at the grocery store.
  • Water – this is to loosen up the sauce and help things meld together.
  • Mild Diced Green Chiles – if you like things spicy consider getting the hotter version.
  • Taco Seasoning – buy some or make it homemade.
  • Cumin – just a little extra for flavor.
  • Salt + Pepper – season to taste.
  • Hamburger Buns – we like to toast our buns to give them some texture.

How to Make Taco Sloppy Joes

This is a one-pot recipe that starts in a skillet and ends between two toasted hamburger buns! For the full Taco Sloppy Joe recipe see the recipe card down below.

1. Brown the Meat

Heat olive oil in a large skillet and sauté onions until they start to soften. Add in garlic and turkey. Break apart turkey as it browns.

2. Make the Sauce

Once the turkey is cooked through, stir in tomato sauce, water, green chiles, taco seasoning, cumin, salt, and pepper. Cook half-covered for several minutes. Stir in beans and cook until heated through.

3. Serve with Buns

Spoon mixture onto warm hamburger buns and top with any desired toppings. Serve immediately.

Storing Taco Sloppy Joes

Any Taco Sloppy Joe leftovers can be stored in an airtight container, in the fridge for up to 5 days!

This recipe is great for meal prepping for the rest of the week.

Freezing

The beauty of this recipe is that you could even store the leftovers in the freezer for up to 4 months!

Cool completely, then transfer sloppy joe mixture into an airtight container. To use, thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave.
