Baked Beans
If you like sweet and tangy baked beans, keep reading! Directions on how to cook these in the crockpot are at the bottom in the recipe card. Also, tips on how to make these into ‘baked beans’ with no tang are down that way too.
Main Ingredients Needed
Today, I made baked beans for you all because {1} I happen to love baked beans and don’t think I make them enough {2} they are pretty easy to throw together {3} they go well with pretty much any summer meal/grilled meat and {4} odds are you have 97% of all the ingredients in your house right now. My kind of recipe. Here’s what you’ll need:
- The Base – This includes bacon, onion, and garlic. This starts the recipe off right, but really this base is the start of many tasty recipes.
- For Flavor – Here’s a long list of common ingredients that will take these beans over the edge. Maple syrup, mustard, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, brown sugar, vinegar, pepper, garlic salt, and molasses. I know that was a lot but trust me it is SO worth it.
- The Beans – Last but not least we have the beans. This is the simplest and most humble of ingredients, but it is also the star of this recipe. You’ll need 4, 15-ounce cans of pinto beans.

How to Make Baked Beans
- Start by slicing some strips of bacon into bite-sized pieces. Start these a-cookin’ in a large dutch oven or pot.
- Chop up a small onion and mince some garlic. Add that to the bacon and keep cooking!
- Empty out and rinse 4 cans of beans. Pour these into the pot, along with…
- ….a plethora of ingredients. Lots of pantry items. Don’t be scared by the long list….you have most of these on hand, I’m pretty sure.
- So, once you have everything measured out and in your pot, bring it up to a simmer and then reduce the heat down and cook low and slow for 4+ hours. The longer these baked beans cook the better they taste. Enjoy with cornbread!
No Tang Baked Beans
If you just want these to taste more like plain baked beans and reduce the tang, replace the vinegar with another tablespoon of brown sugar and voila! Problem solved.
Crockpot Baked Beans
- Place a large pot over medium heat. Slice bacon into small bite-sized pieces and brown in pot.
- Stir in onions and garlic and cook another 2 minutes or so. Pour in remaining ingredients and cook to bring to simmer.
- Then transfer to a pre-warmed crockpot and cook on low 8 hours. The longer these baked beans cook the better they taste. Enjoy with cornbread!
Main Dishes to serve with this recipe
- Classic Homemade Burgers
- Pan-Seared Pork Chops with Maple Gravy
- Baked Chicken Legs
- Easy Oven Baby Back Ribs
Serve these Baked Beans up on their own, or add to any meal. I found that these tasted their very best the next day after a night in the fridge. Totally weird, but true. They’re a great addition and my husband and I love love loved them.
Enjoy, friends! Have a great day!
