Ground Turkey Lettuce Wraps are a healthy, quick and easy dish to make and pack so much flavor into every bite! These wraps are perfect for lunch or dinner on busy weeknights that the whole family will devour! These aren’t just boring ol’ turkey wraps – these are jam packed with asian flavors and veggies and are ready to eat in just 30 minutes! Bonus!
Why You’ll Love These Ground Turkey Wraps
From start to finish, these ground turkey lettuce wraps are ready in less than 30 minutes! Turning your lettuce into a tasty wrap is the way to go! Ground turkey is cooked up with onion and garlic, along with sugar snap peas and crunchy water chestnuts. The star of the show here is the sauce! Made with soy sauce, rice vinegar and hoisin sauce, it really brings the flavor! If you want to make it even lower carb, simply eliminate the water chestnuts and cut back on the hoisin.
Ingredients Needed
Here’s the ingredient list of everything you’ll need to make these easy lettuce wraps:
- sesame oil– used to flavor and cook the ground turkey and onion.
- ground turkey– I love using ground turkey because it’s so full of protein. If you don’t have turkey, you could also use ground chicken, ground beef or ground pork instead. Any of those are great alternatives.
- onion, garlic + fresh ginger– great aromatics for fresh flavor!
- 8 oz can water chestnuts– adds crunch to every bite. If you don’t like them, consider adding some carrots or bamboo shoots.
- sugar snap peas- adds color, nutrition and crunch!
- soy sauce- I like to use low-sodium soy sauce, but use what you have.
- rice vinegar– adds acidity that helps balance all these flavors, but if you don’t have rice vinegar, feel free to substitute with white vinegar, apple cider vinegar or even a little lime juice.
- hoisin sauce– for a savory sweet boost of flavor!
- green onions– for garnish and color.
- fresh cilantro– chopped, for garnish and color.
- bibb or butter lettuce leaves– use whatever lettuce you prefer. Bibb (aka butter lettuce) has light and tender leaves that are the perfect size for a wrap. Iceberg or Romaine lettuce is more sturdy and also a great option.
How to Make Ground Turkey Lettuce Wraps
Lettuce is so much more fun to eat in wrap form! This can be an appetizer or a meal and comes together quickly! For full recipe details, including ingredients and measurements, see the printable recipe card down below. Here is step-by-step how I made and assembled my lettuce wraps. These are very customizable and easy to add or omit what you want.
Cook Ground Turkey + Onion
Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add in sesame oil, onion and ground turkey. Season with salt and pepper. As meat cooks, break apart with spatula.
Add Remaining Ingredients
Once meat is fully cooked, add in garlic, ginger, water chestnuts and sugar snap peas. Cook 1-2 minutes until it becomes fragrant. Stir in soy sauce, hoisin sauce and rice vinegar. Cook another 2-3 minutes.
Portion Out Into Lettuce Leaves
Divide the ground turkey mixture into 4 equal portions and serve with lettuce leaves. Garnish with green onion and cilantro, if desired.
Storing Leftovers
Store any leftover filling or lettuce separately and in an airtight container in the fridge. Leftovers should be fresh for up to 4-5 days.
To Freeze: If you want to save the filling even longer, you can freeze it! Allow turkey mixture to cool to room temperature, then store in a freezer safe container and into the freezer for up to 3 months. Allow to thaw overnight. Reheat filling in the microwave or stove top and serve in fresh lettuce leaves.
FAQ and Recipe Tips For Lettuce Wraps
Add Different Veggies – If you want to add different or more veggies to the ground turkey filling, go for it! Consider adding mushrooms, carrots, or red bell pepper. Add whatever veggies you enjoy.
Spice It Up – If you like spicy food, consider adding crushed red pepper flakes to the filling mixture. As the recipe is written, it is mild.
Choose The Right Lettuce – You want to pick a lettuce that will work well as a wrap. Butter lettuce and Bibb lettuce are perfect little lettuce cups that can be filled and folded. Romaine and Iceberg lettuce are a more of a crisp lettuce and work great too.
Yes! You can make the filling a couple days before and store in the fridge until ready to use. Technically, you’d be fine up to 5 days ahead, but I like to use the filling while the veggies are still crunchy.
